If you are looking for a nursing home for your elderly loved one, it is critical that you conduct thorough research. Nursing home abuse and neglect are deplorably common in Illinois.
Many long-term care facilities do not take the time to perform background checks on caregivers. Some nursing homes do not supervise their staff, which is one reason why most cases of elder abuse are never reported to authorities.
A recent press release cited data from the Caregiverlist Index, which is responsible for assessing the costs and quality of the 823 nursing homes across Illinois. In 2015, more than 200 nursing homes in our state scored two stars or below out of a possible five stars – and only 3.5 percent of nursing homes earned a five-star rating.
Unfortunately, all it takes is one negligent caregiver to injure a nursing home resident. If you or your loved one was a victim of elder abuse in Illinois, contact The Dinizulu Law Group, Ltd.

How to Report Nursing Home Abuse in Illinois
If you suspect that a nursing home resident is being neglected, abused or financially exploited in a nursing home, it is critical that you report the incident immediately. Elder abuse can cause severe health complications, mental anguish and even death.
You can report nursing home neglect and abuse to the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Nursing Home Complaint Hotline by calling 1-800-252-4343. Be ready to answer the following questions:
- What is the name of the patient, and where is he or she currently residing?
- What happened to the resident? Do your allegations relate to abuse, neglect, poor health care or a medication error?
- When did the incident occur?
- What is the name of the facility, and where is it located? Where inside the facility did the incident occur?
- Has your complaint been addressed by the facility’s management team?
If your family member lives in Supportive Living Facilities, contact the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services’ SLF Complaint Hotline by calling 1-800-226-0768.
You can also report the abuse, financial exploitation or neglect of an older person or a person with disabilities by calling the 24-hour Adult Protective Services Hotline at 1-866-800-1409 or

After you report the abuse, contact a Chicago elder abuse attorney to discuss your case.
