The attorneys at the Dinizulu Law Group have won a landmark victory for rape victims in the Chicago area after it was discovered a police department had been routinely mishandling rape investigations for years.

Seven women filed lawsuits in federal court against the city’s police department and former chief, alleging police at times failed to take basic reports, submit rape kit evidence or arrest suspects implicated by evidence.

In one particularly horrible case, an alleged lapse by police allowed a Cook County correctional officer continue to molest his stepdaughter for years. That man is now behind bars.

The victory resulted in a settlement for the victims and reforms at the city’s police department. The suburb is required to boost training of police officers in how to handle sexual assaults as well as how to properly report statistics to the state police.
