Accidents are happening all around us. During the early morning hours and even late at night, drivers are getting involved in preventable accidents that result in them suffering from life-threatening injuries that have the potential to affect them for weeks, months, and even years. But, with drivers engaging in behavior that is both distracting and dangerous, we can only expect to see the number of roadway accidents continue to rise, that is unless drivers begin implementing safety measures that will help keep them safe and avoid an accident.
Just a few days ago, a horrible accident occurred in Naperville, which is approximately 45 minutes away from Chicago, that led to one motorcyclist having to be hospitalized [Source: Patch.com]. Police say Mauro Apostoli, 49, of West Chicago was traveling northbound on Rte. 59 on his 2017 Indian Touring when he crashed into the back of a semi-tractor trailer. It was around 2:41 a.m. in the morning when the incident occurred and it took place near the intersections of 95th Street and Rte. 59.
Apparently, police determined that Apostoli had been driving under the influence when he slammed into the back of the semi being driven by a 45-year-old male from Villa Park. His decision to drive intoxicated is what ultimately resulted in him having to be transported to Edward Hospital suffering from serious injuries. The driver of the semi did not sustain any injuries. The motorcyclist’s actions also led to him being charged with one count of driving under the influence. The unfortunate collision left the intersection of Rte. 59 and 95th closed for hours and didn’t reopen for travelers until around 8:00 a.m. During that time, crews were called out to reconstruct the accident.
The truth is, whether you are driving at night or in the middle of the day, you are likely sharing the roadway with different types of vehicles, some much larger and more likely to cause severe damage if involved in a wreck. And because you can’t be responsible for how others behave when they are behind the wheel, you must always monitor yourself as you drive and ensure you are attentive and avoiding any type of behavior that could lead to a serious or even fatal accident.
Some of these behaviors you want to avoid that have been known to cause some of the most severe accidents include:
- Distracted Driving. Did you know that is 2016, distracted driving was responsible for claiming the lives of 3,450 people [Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)]?
- Drunk Driving. Each day, 29 people in the U.S. die as a result of a drunk driving accident. In 2016, 10,497 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes [Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)].
- Driving Drowsy. Drowsy driving was responsible for approximately 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths in 2013 alone, according to the CDC.
The truth is, the motorcyclist involved in the wreck is lucky to be alive as the majority of incidents similar to this often result in a death. Therefore, rather than put your life or those around you at risk, drive safe, avoid distractions, and refrain from engaging in risky or dangerous behavior.
